On Call Firefighter
Retained (On Call) Firefighter's are a crucial part of the Fire Service - they provide an efficient and effective emergency service to the community of Staffordshire.
What is a Retained Firefighter?
Retained Firefighter's provide emergency response cover from either their home or work base, which needs to be within five minutes of their local station. After their initial training course, retained Firefighter's attend weekly drill nights to ensure they maintain their skills, in addition to which there are many more opportunities for training throughout the year. In addition to responding to emergencies, retained Firefighter's also get involved in community fire safety initiatives in their local area, including home fire risk checks and educational visits.

- Are you mentally strong enough to deal with highly stressful situations in a positive and professional manner, helping people in distress and giving them first aid?
In order to become a retained firefighter you must:
• Live or work within five minutes of a fire station (listed below) so you can respond immediately.
Predominantly be able to give cover during the day time and weekends.
Your local fire station will have a map detailing the boundaries for the five minute callout time, please contact your local fire station to see whether you fall into this category
• Have a real wish to support your local community
• Have an enthusiasm and willingness to work in a team environment
• Have a good level of physical fitness
Your initial training (Core Skills) will be delivered over a 3 week period or on a modular basis, with the 7 modules to be completed over a 12 week period. Further training modules are required within a 24 and 36 month period. Again these can be taken consecutively or on a modular basis.
